Figure 1b. (a) Eight thin-section spin-echo MR images (repetition time msec/echo time msec, 1,500/98; field of view, 220 mm; matrix size, 128 x 128 [zero-filled to 256 x 256]; imaging bandwidth, 25 kHz) show most of the mesencephalon and lower portion of the globus pallidus. Images were reconstructed from the final echo of the GESFIDE sequence. Slight ghosting associated with inflowing blood can be observed on the most caudal section (top left). However, the artifacts are well separated from the substantia nigra. Images have been cropped to 80% of the full field of view. Top red box = enlarged region shown in b, bottom red box = enlarged region shown in c. (b, c) Enlarged images of the regions enclosed by the red boxes in a. Note the low-signal-intensity regions, which correspond to (b) the substantia nigra (SN) and the red nucleus (RN) and (c) the globus pallidus (GP), putamen (PUT), and caudate head (CA).
