Paula J. Woodward, MD, will serve as Distinguished Scientist in the Department of Radiologic Pathology at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology (AFIP) from July 1, 1999, to June 30, 2000. Dr Woodward is an associate professor of radiology and the director of the radiology residency program at the University of Utah School of Medicine, Salt Lake City. Her area of expertise is abdominal imaging, with special interest in genitourinary radiology. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Colorado, Denver, in 1984, and completed a diagnostic radiology residency at the Wilford Hall United States Air Force (USAF) Medical Center, Lackland Air Force Base, Tex, in 1990. After her training, she served as staff radiologist in the abdominal imaging section of the same institution from 1990 to 1992. Her military career also included a tour of duty as a flight surgeon at the Dover USAF Hospital, Del, and military deployment in support of Operation Desert Storm.
Dr Woodward is active in numerous national and international radiologic societies, including the Radiological Society of North America, the American College of Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the American Institute for Ultrasound in Medicine, the Society of Radiologists in Ultrasound, the American Association for Women Radiologists, and the Association of Program Directors in Radiology. She is a reviewer for the Journal of Magnetic Resonance, Cancer, and the International Journal of Radiation Oncology, Biology, Physics and has served as guest editor for Seminars in Ultrasound, CT and MRI.
She has authored or co-authored 20 original publications and book chapters. She is well known for her outstanding teaching abilities and has a reputation as an enthusiastic and gifted lecturer. In fact, she was selected "Teacher of the Year" for her department on three separate occasions. Her expertise in abdominal imaging and genitourinary radiology will greatly enhance the fulfillment of the mission of the AFIP. As Distinguished Scientist, Dr Woodward will participate in all educational and research activities of the Department of Radiologic Pathology at the AFIP, thus making a major contribution to the education of radiology residents and practicing radiologists in the United States and throughout the world.
The Distinguished Scientist program was first established in 1983 and is now an integral part of the Department of Radiologic Pathology. The position receives federal funding through the American Registry of Pathology. Funding is also provided by several other organizations: the American College of Radiology, the American Roentgen Ray Society, the Radiological Society of North America, the Association of University Radiologists, and the American Osteopathic College of Radiology. Representatives from each of these organizations, together with a representative from the Association of Program Directors in Radiology, form the Conjoint Committee for Radiologic Pathology at the AFIP and are responsible for selecting the Distinguished Scientist each year. The committee strongly considers the projected needs of the Department of Radiologic Pathology and the AFIP when selecting the Distinguished Scientist.
Any established academic radiologist interested in spending a year studying the correlation between abnormal radiologic images and their underlying pathologic processes is welcome to apply. Those wishing to apply should submit a letter of interest outlining the projects they would pursue during their time at the AFIP and an updated copy of their curriculum vitae to Melissa L. Rosado-de-Christenson at the address listed herein. Applications for the AFIP Distinguished Scientist position for the 20012002 academic year must be received by January 15, 2000.
