C. Douglas Maynard, MD, was installed as President of the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) on December 2, 1999, at the organization's 85th Scientific Assembly and Annual Meeting in Chicago. No one is more eminently qualified than Dr Maynard to lead the society into the next millennium. He is well known to us as a true visionary who has made enormous contributions to the RSNA and whose contributions extend throughout our discipline of radiology, both nationally and internationally. As a researcher, author, and lecturer, he is widely recognized as a leader in virtually all clinical and academic radiology circles.

During that time, the indefatigable Dr Maynard was also a member of the Board of Trustees of the RSNA Research and Education Foundation, serving first as a member, then as its Secretary in 1997-1998, and as its Chairman in 1999. His ingenuity and vision led to the formation of the Office of Research Development within the RSNA. He was a key participant in the planning of the Ad Roc Real Estate Committee, whose much-appreciated efforts culminated in the construction of our new headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois. He is also seated on the RSNA Health Policy and Practice Committee, the FutuRAD Committee, the Corporate Relations Committee, and several committees within the Research and Education Foundation. Whatever the assignment, Dr Maynard demonstrates the exceptional leadership, fairness, and foresight that led his peers to elect him to the RSNA's highest office.
Dr Maynard serves as Director of the Division of Radiologic Sciences and Chairman of the Department of Radiology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Born in New Jersey, Dr Maynard spent his early years in Costa Rica and was educated through high school in that country. He was 16 years old when he returned to the United States to enter Wake Forest University. He graduated in 1955 and went on to study at Wake Forest's medical school, then known as the Bowman Gray School of Medicine, where be completed his medical degree in 1959. After a rotating internship at Tripler Army Hospital and two additional years of military service, he returned to take his radiology residency training at North Carolina Baptist Hospital and Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University. With characteristic loyalty and dedication, he has spent his entire professional career at Wake Forest and has held numerous positions of responsibility within the medical school and university.
Dr Maynard has lent his time, talent, and enthusiasm not only to the RSNA and to his own academic institution, but also to many other professional organizations all of which have benefited from placing him in representative leadership positions. These include the Academy of Radiology Research, The Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, and the RSNA/ICR. His leadership qualities were quickly recognized and led to his election as President of the American Board of Radiology, the Society of Chairman of Academic Radiology Departments, and the Society of Nuclear Medicine.
He has likewise been a tireless advocate for his community, making invaluable contributions to the well-being of its residents through his participation in Leadership Winston-Salem, the Chamber of Commerce, the Downtown Development Corporation, and the North Carolina School of the Arts Foundation. He was instrumental in the creation of the Winston-Salem Crisis Control organization's free pharmacy, which provides medications worth over $1 million yearly for more than 14,000 patients. In addition, the developers of the Piedmont Triad Research Park acknowledge Dr Maynard as the driving force of their enterprise.
Not surprisingly, Dr Maynard has accumulated quite a list of well-deserved honors reflecting his achievements and the high esteem in which he is held, both personally and professionally. These include Alpha Omega Alpha, James Picker Scholar, Fellow of the American College of Radiology, and Fellow of the American College of Nuclear Physicians. He received the Distinguished Achievement Award from the Medical Alumni Association of Bowman Gray School of Medicine, the Physician Community Service Award, the North Carolina Medical Society Certificate of Recognition (Humanitarian Award)Human Relations Committee, City of Winston-Salem. In 1997, in recognition of his contributions to the advancement of radiology, the Association of University Radiologists awarded Dr Maynard the gold medal. In 1999, the North Carolina Chapter of the American College of Radiology honored him with its own highest award, the silver medal.
Through it all, Dr Maynard has had the unwavering support of his vivacious wife, Mary Anne, as well as their three children and their families. We appreciate their generosity in sharing this devoted family man with our organization.
As the RSNA embraces the promise and excitement of a new millennium, we can be confident that our leader is a person of boundless vision and energy anchored in experience and wisdom. We simply could not be in better hands.
