From the Editor

Radiology 2003: Ann S. Fulcher, MD, Completes Her Service as Senior Deputy Editor

Anthony V. Proto, MD, Editor

Index terms: Editorials • Radiology (journal)

In the January 1998 issue of Radiology (1), I introduced Ann S. Fulcher, MD, as one of the new Deputy Editors for our Journal. She received her MD degree in 1987 from the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond and subsequently trained as a resident in diagnostic radiology at the same institution, where she was chief resident. Owing to a military obligation in the U.S. Air Force at the completion of her training, she relocated to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where she was initially appointed as a staff radiologist, holding as well the appointment of assistant professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, Maryland. Subsequently she became chairperson of the Department of Radiology at Andrews Air Force Base.

Ann S. Fulcher, MD

On completion of her military obligation in 1995, she joined the Department of Radiology at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University as an assistant professor. She was promoted to associate professor with tenure a few years thereafter and recently has been promoted to professor of radiology with tenure at the same institution. During her years at the Medical College of Virginia, she has held numerous administrative responsibilities, including director of the Section of Abdominal Imaging, vice chairman of Operations, and, as of February 2003, chairman of the Department of Radiology.

Dr Fulcher has delivered numerous invited presentations, including those as a visiting professor, and has to her credit numerous peer-reviewed publications, as well as book chapters. Moreover, she has been a recipient of numerous honors, including Phi Beta Kappa, Rhodes Scholar candidacy, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, Distinguished Resident Award from the American Association of Women Radiologists, selection for the Picker-AUR Faculty Development Program, Meritorious Service Medal of the U.S. Air Force, and, most recently, the 16th Annual Visiting Professorship for Achievements in Radiologic Research and Teaching from the Society of Gastrointestinal Radiologists. She is certified in diagnostic radiology by the American Board of Radiology.

In 2000, I had the pleasure of announcing the appointment of Dr Fulcher as Senior Deputy Editor for Radiology. In my announcement, I stated, "Since joining the Radiology editorial team as Deputy Editor, Dr Fulcher has demonstrated levels of dedication, insight, and thoroughness that can serve as models for the same. She has been an exceptionally highly-valued member of our editorial team and is most deserving of her appointment as Senior Deputy Editor of Radiology" (2).

Those who know Dr Fulcher will attest to her boundless energy and her boundless enthusiasm for her work. The same was true in her position as Deputy Editor and later as Senior Deputy Editor for our Journal. Our Journal has indeed been fortunate to have such an individual as a member of our editorial team. She has, without question, contributed immensely to the quality of our monthly publication. We wish her every possible success in her new position as Chairman of the Department of Radiology at the Medical College of Virginia of Virginia Commonwealth University!
