Diagnosis Please Certificate of Recognition Awarded to Two Individuals

Anthony V. Proto, MD

Index terms: Diagnosis Please

The 5th year of Diagnosis Please cases (cases 49–60) was completed in March 2003. As for last year, I am delighted to announce that we have again identified more than one individual who has submitted the highest number of correct answers: Douglas L. Teich, MD, and Christopher Vittore, MD. This popular feature in Radiology began in April 1998 (1). For the first 3 years, we identified only one individual per year who had submitted the highest number of correct answers: Sergio Julio Moguillansky, MD, for cases 1–12; Seyed Alireza Emamian, MD, PhD, for cases 13–24; and Sergio Julio Moguillansky, MD, again for cases 25–36 (24). In the 4th year, we identified four individuals: Mustafa Kemal Demir, MD, Milton Rafael Fuentealba, MD, Douglas Scott Katz, MD, and Stefanos B. Lachanis, MD, for cases 37–48 (5).

It is our plan to continue this popular feature in Radiology, provided authors are interested in preparing and submitting cases. Any author so interested should contact me, so that we can discuss the case and determine if it is appropriate.

We extend our heartiest congratulations to the two winners!

DOUGLAS L. TEICH, MD

Dr Teich received his MD degree from Stanford University School of Medicine, California. He trained for 3 years in internal medicine at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia. His residency in diagnostic radiology at Beth Israel Hospital, Boston, Massachusetts, was followed by a fellowship in magnetic resonance imaging at Long Beach Memorial MRI Center, Long Beach, California. He later moved to Boston University School of Medicine in Massachusetts, holding the appointment of assistant professor of radiology, as well as acting head of musculoskeletal imaging at Boston Medical Center. This fall he will join Lowell Radiological Associates in Massachussetts. Dr Teich is certified by both the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Radiology and also holds the American Board of Radiology Certificate of Added Qualifications in Neuroradiology. In his letter to me, Dr. Teich stated that he awaits "each month’s Diagnosis Please case for the challenge it presents." He further notes, "I have found that these cases test those attributes critical to a radiologist’s daily practice, namely, perception, analysis, flexibility of thought, and tenacity. Furthermore, they serve as an enjoyable and relatively painless means of continuing radiological education." Dr Teich will receive a certificate (pictured herein) in recognition of his accomplishment.

CHRISTOPHER VITTORE, MD

Dr Vittore received his MD degree from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, Chicago. After completion of the same, he trained as a resident in diagnostic radiology at Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Illinois, subsequent to which he received additional fellowship training in neuroradiology at the Medical College of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. During his residency training, he was a recipient of the Roentgen Resident/Fellow Research Award sponsored by the Radiological Society of North America. On completion of his fellowship training, he joined Rockford Radiology Associates serving Rockford Health System–Rockford Memorial Hospital in Illinois. Dr Vittore is certified by the American Board of Radiology. In his letter to me, Dr Vittore stated, "I have enjoyed participating in the Diagnosis Please series." He continues: "[T]he challenging cases test and expand one’s knowledge base while strengthening reasoning skills. Many times as I consulted the literature, I learned not only about the presented unknown case but also about other entities that were included in the differential diagnosis." In conclusion he states, "I have learned quite a bit through my participation in Diagnosis Please and hope it will continue to be part of Radiology." Dr Vittore will receive a certificate (pictured herein) in recognition of his accomplishment.
