Radiology 2004: James H. Thrall Appointed Perspectives Editor

Anthony V. Proto, MD

Index terms: Editorials • Perspectives • Radiology (journal)

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I announce the appointment of James H. Thrall, MD, as the second Perspectives Editor of Radiology. He follows Richard M. Friedenberg, MD, who has recently completed his service in that position (1). In his valedictory, Dick Friedenberg stated, "It is time for me to pass the baton, and it is being taken up by a very accomplished individual, James H. Thrall, MD" (1). Truer words could not have been written, because, indeed, Jim Thrall is a highly accomplished individual who is regarded as a visionary leader in our specialty. Jim has already functioned as a guest author for Perspectives (2,3), and I know that he will indeed take the baton from Dick Friedenberg and twirl it into a series of Perspectives articles that will undoubtedly be thought-provoking, stimulating, and focused on important topics for us.

James H. Thrall, MD

Jim Thrall obtained his MD degree from the University of Michigan Medical School in Ann Arbor. He followed that with an internship and a residency in radiology at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, DC. The same medical center was the site of his training as a fellow in nuclear medicine. Subsequently, he returned to his alma mater as assistant professor of internal medicine and radiology, nuclear medicine section, where he remained for a number of years, achieving the rank of professor of inter-nal medicine and radiology. He then left Ann Arbor and became Chairman of the Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. After 5 years in that position, he moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where he has since remained as the Juan M. Taveras Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and radiologist-in-chief at Massachusetts General Hospital.

Jim’s career has been studded with honors, awards, and named lectureships: graduation with high distinction (mathematics) from the University of Michigan; Phi Beta Kappa; Jerome W. Conn Award for Excellence in Clinical Research, Department of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan Medical School; Presidential Award, Central Chapter of the Society of Nuclear Medicine; fellow of the American College of Radiology; honorary MA degree, Harvard University; Wendell G. Scott Memorial Lectureship, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology (St Louis, Mo); Walter M. Whitehouse Lectureship, University of Michigan; Hickey Memorial Lecture, Michigan Radiological Society; Malcolm D. Jones Orator, American Alliance of Academic Chief Residents in Radiology; Philip J. Hodes Lecture, Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Merrill C. Sosman Lecture, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School; Distinguished Lecturer in Radiology, University of Virginia Medical School, Charlottesville; Aubrey O. Hampton Lecture, Massachusetts General Hospital; Caldwell Lecture, American Roentgen Ray Society; Moreton Lecture, Texas Radiological Society; Senturia Lecture, Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology; and Castele Lecture, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, Ohio.

A member of several professional organizations, Jim has served on an extensive number of committees, where he has held important positions of responsibility. Of note as well, he has served or currently serves as president of the American Roentgen Ray Society, as a member of the Board of Chancellors of the American College of Radiology, as chairman of the Commission on Molecular Imaging of the American College of Radiology, as a member of the Research & Education Foundation of the Radiological Society of North America, and as a member of several editorial boards, including that of Radiology. Jim has to his credit some 225 scientific articles, books, and book chapters. In addition to those are numerous abstracts, scientific displays, and educational programs. A highly sought-after speaker, Jim’s presentations and visiting professorships number some 250.

How is Jim Thrall regarded in the Department of Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital? I have contacted a number of his faculty colleagues, and this is what they say: He is "a visionary," an "effective leader and manager," "a true visionary in every sense of the word," "not only does he see and understand the future, he has been creating it for years," "he brings a passion to his job that is absolutely astounding," "the level of caring for our department and each individual in it is truly remarkable," and "he proves the fact that leadership comes from a management style based on common sense and insight."

In his message to me about his upcoming position as Perspectives Editor, Jim stated, "This is a special column. It should be used to call the attention of the radiology community to important issues." He continues by saying that "many of the issues, including the first two that I have chosen, will be largely focused outside radiology to help broaden people’s horizons but may have implications for radiology which I would like to include, as appropriate, in each column." About the first two that he has written as a guest author for Perspectives (2,3) Jim stated, "I have found writing the first two columns to be a great stimulus. I am learning about things of interest to me but, absent a reason, would remain largely unknown." Jim ended his message by saying, "I am grateful for the opportunity and look forward to working with you."

I am grateful that the Board of Directors of the Radiological Society of North America appointed Jim Thrall, at my suggestion, as the next Perspectives Editor. I know Jim will take his responsibility seriously and will broaden the horizons of our readers as he focuses on topics of interest and importance to all of us. Please join me in welcoming Jim Thrall as the next Radiology Perspectives Editor. I very much look forward to working with Jim over the next many years and fully expect that our readers will benefit from his insights and thoughts, as well as those of other authors he may choose to invite to prepare Perspectives articles.
